📐 On-Finger Measurement Methods (For Self-Measurement)

These methods use tools found within our printable guide for maximum accuracy.

Method 1: Using an Existing Ring (Most Accurate DIY)

If you have a ring that already fits the intended finger perfectly:

  1. Print the PDF at 100% scale. (Use the on-page print-check ruler to confirm accuracy).

  2. Place your existing ring over the circles on the printout.

  3. The correct size is the circle where the inside edge of your ring perfectly aligns with the circle's line.

  4. If your ring falls exactly between two sizes, always choose the larger size.

Method 2: The Paper Strip Tool (Circumference)

Use the paper strip provided in the PDF to measure your finger's circumference directly:

  1. Cut out the measurement strip provided within the PDF.

  2. Wrap the strip snugly around the widest part of your finger (usually the knuckle or the base).

  3. Read the size directly from the strip, or mark the point where the ends meet.

  4. Reference this circumference measurement (in $\text{mm}$) against the size chart on our website to find your final ring size.

🕵️ The Secret Sizer: Tips for a Surprise Ring

Planning a surprise (like an engagement) requires stealth! These creative methods help you determine the size without giving away your plans.

1. Recruit a 'Secret Agent'

  • Ask a close friend, sister, or mother of the recipient. They might already know the size, or they can subtly ask the question for you (e.g., while shopping or trying on their own jewelry).

2. The 'Tracing' Method

  • Borrow an existing ring that the recipient wears on the correct finger (the one you intend for the engagement ring).

  • Quickly trace the inside of the ring onto a piece of paper. This tracing can be used against the ring size circles in our PDF when the recipient isn't around.

  • Crucial: Always return the ring exactly where you found it!

3. The 'Try-It-On' Method

  • Slip the borrowed ring onto one of your own fingers and note exactly where it stops (e.g., halfway down your pinky, or at the base of your index finger).

  • You can then measure the circumference of that specific spot on your own finger using Method 2 (The Paper Strip) to find the approximate size.

4. The 'Sleep Measurement'

  • While the recipient is in a deep sleep, gently wrap a piece of string or the paper strip (from the PDF) around their finger and mark the spot.

  • Be aware: This method is the riskiest for waking them up and may be less accurate due to the temperature difference during sleep.

💡 Essential Sizing Tips: Do's and Don'ts

✅ DOs

  • Measure at the end of the day: Your fingers are typically warmer and slightly swollen then, which provides the most representative measurement.

  • Measure 3 to 4 times: Repeat the process for accuracy. If you get inconsistent results, use the largest measurement.

  • Account for the knuckle: Make sure the ring size is large enough to slide comfortably over your knuckle. The ring should be snug enough to prevent it from falling off, but loose enough to get over the knuckle with slight resistance.

  • Consider band width: For rings with a wider band ($6\text{ mm}$ or more), you may need to go up a half size, as these tend to feel tighter than thin bands of the same size.

❌ DON'Ts

  • Don't measure when your hands are cold: Cold fingers shrink. Measuring when cold will likely result in a ring that is too small when your hands warm up.

  • Don't substitute the tool: Do not use stretchy material like thread or yarn if you can't use the paper strip, as this leads to a highly inaccurate measurement.

  • Don't use a ring from the wrong finger: Ring sizes vary significantly between fingers and even between the left and right hand.

  • Don't measure after exercise or heavy salt intake: Fingers can temporarily swell after physical activity or consuming salty foods. Wait a few hours for your hand size to normalize.

We understand that getting the size right for a surprise can be challenging. If you are still unsure after using these methods, remember that choosing a slightly larger size is generally safer, as most rings can be resized easily after the proposal!
